which moss to use ...

Which assortment would you recommend for trying moss growing for the first time, in a glass dish/bowl in Connecticut - and will it make the trip in the cold? Thank you, tom

All the moss I have will work in either an open or closed terrarium/dish. If it is open then it will need to be misted more often. You can tell by color changes and feel. All of it will need good lighting and be sure it is de chlorinated water as well as water that is not a high base. Moss prefers more acidic surroundings. Proper drainage also is important as moss likes dampness but hates to stay wet and will die...with the exception of the delicate fern moss which I have put into several inches of water.
The haircap moss tends to dry out much faster if used indoors as an open type dish would be. The best would be the pillow/roughstalk to start with if an open style. The reindeer moss is also very good but when dry...it is brittle...not dead just easily broken. When misted it becomes all spongy again.

How much time would you say one has to 'move them around?' I put a lot (too many maybe?) in a jar terrarium of moss assortment yesterday, and was wondering how long it takes for the moss to "take hold," or how long do I have to move it around and re-arrange it before I damage it? Thanks, tom

You can move and arrange all you want. Moss has no roots...so you can move now or later in a few weeks or months if you want to change it up add take away or change the look. Hope this helps...thanks again!
