Charcoal in terrariums...

Posted by Teresa's Plants & More Store at 02:10 PM on February 13, 2010 Comments comments (0)

I do not use charcoal in most of my terrariums for the main reason that the moss does not die and decompose like plant material in regular terrariums. I do have it available for sale on my web store if needed. It is used because it adds a layer that helps to absorb odors from the decaying plant matter. It will not harm the moss to add it to yours. It does also give a visual addition to the laying in your jar.

which moss to use ...

Which assortment would you recommend for trying moss growing for the first time, in a glass dish/bowl in Connecticut - and will it make the trip in the cold? Thank you, tom

I live in texas and would like to know whats the most heat tolerant moss as well as what moss would grow best indoors. I have many carnivorous plants and am contemplating making a terrarium, or just growing the moss indoors. Any suggestions? Great website, its hard to find moss being sold let along several kinds! Thanks.

Help with gnats in moss

I need help with gnats!! Does anyone know of an organic gnat killer that will not hurt my moss?

This is very easy to control. You can buy this flying insect spray that is pyrethrins goes by 2 names Purge Brand or Country Vet brand.Spray a cotton ball with this and put inside your terrarium etc (DO NOT USE IF YOU HAVE ANY LIVING ANIMALS) I have an automatic sprayer in my house that dispenses this 24 hours a day for all kinds of flys etc. It is even used in restaurants to kill bugs so it is fine to use in your terrariums. Close the lid and after a few minutes they will all be dead. If they have laid eggs then it will be another process when those hatch. If you have gnats in your house this is how they can also get in if you leave your lid off for air. The machine can be bought at feed supply stores cocops etc even large cleaning supply stores stock it . I get mine online a bit cheaper.

Gnats!!

Does anyone know how to get rid of gnats? They are all over the place in my moss terrariums! They do not have any animals in them, but I would like something organic and safe. Thanks!

How can I store the "moss paint", without it molding, if I am not going to use it all now.

I would only mix up enough of this to use for the project that day. What I ship to you can be saved for a long time either  just in a container inside or even placed outside in a container.

Thank you again...

Teresa

I need your help on a new project. I live in Michigan and was given 2 baby American Toads maybe 6 months ago. I have a 75-90 gal tank that I want to set up with hills, valleys, a pond, possibly a waterfall, some flat land areas. Many different mosses, plants

Toads are so fun to raise and fairly easy to care for. The items I sell here are all safe for them.

Please remember that toads absorb water through their skin. After they eat...they will go into a water source and sit there a while.  REMEMBER...they can NOT swim and will drown if not able to touch the bottom to crawl out of.

I learned this the hard way and lost some baby toads because they could not reach anything when they got into deeper water(which was only 3" deep to begin with) So be sure there are plants etc, available that they can reach so they can crawl out. I keep stones on the bottom of my water source and plants that lay across it too(artifical) so they will always be able to climb out.

I will be adding more iformation about all this on my frog/toad page. Please ask me questions now if you have any.

Can you plant cushion moss and venus fly traps together in a closed or almost closed terrarium??

Posted by Teresa's Plants & More Store at 09:52 AM on October 30, 2009 Comments comments (0)

Thanks Lindsay for your question. I have found a reaaly nice site that sells this type of plant listed in this link here. http://www.mycarnivore.com/venus-fly-trap-care.php

Yes they can exist and I do have many types of moss that would work with it. I would probably keep it planted in a pot so that you could move it around as needed  (if in a large type terrarium) untill you knew the spot it was going to do best in. All this depends on the size of your terrarium.

If it is asmall glass jar then plant it directly and then you can still feed the plant when you take the lid off for air circulation to your moss .

Thank you and good luck with these...I may have to get me another one...it has been years since I had one!
